Emergence
Pompey was born on the 29th of September 106 BC, during the time of the Roman Republic. He was from a wealthy Italian background, his father being a Roman noble and consul (chief magistrate) in 89 BC. Due to his incredible military skills at a young age helping Lucius Sulla in his civil war against Gaius Marius (both Roman generals), he was elected consul for the year 70 BC even though he didn't reach the requirements. He was elected alongside Marcus Crassus, a politician known for being the wealthiest man in all of Rome. Pompey's victories and military thinking in the war with Sulla led him to be bestowed the addition to his name Magnus, meaning "The Great".
At the end of his consulship, Pompey was awarded with supreme command in the Mediterranean. During this time he did many things that boosted Rome, such as ridding the seas of the pirates that had halted Roman trade for many years.
