Pompey lived in the time of the Roman Republic, where most civilization's goals were to fight and conquer. The Romans were run by a strict political system with two consuls leading the cursus honorum (the political system at the time). Two consuls were elected each year to run for one-term together, with Pompey and Crassus being a pair in 70 BC. It was a reasonably sexist society, with only men in government or military positions. In 59 BC Pompey, Julius Caesar and Marcus Crassus formed the first ever triumvirate, secured additionally by Pompey marrying Caesar's daughter Julia. Within five years of the agreement, Crassus was murdered and Julia died during childbirth. With Crassus gone, Pompey and Caesar began competing for power.
