Characteristics
Pompey was a very smart leader, usually to progress his own goals. His choice of siding with Sulla during his civil war pushed his reputation further and making him "The Great". As well, when he became worrisome about Caesars massive power, he wanted to remove him as a threat. He convinced the Senate into furthering his own achievements by attempting to shut down Caesar's military outposts in Gaul. He believed that this would stop Caesar in his tracks, giving himself full power over Rome. But Caesars determination and rage proved otherwise. This shows another aspect of Pompey; fear and betrayal. After Caesar arrived in Rome, they had a five-year war, which Caesar won. Pompey was so afraid for his life he fled Rome, betraying his senate allies. He tried seeking asylum in Egypt but, as Pompey was, they were afraid of Caesar's wrath.
